JIMS EDELBROCK 454SS PROJECT

Here is Jim’s 1990 TBI 454SS play toy.

I think a lot of you will be interested in this project as its a 50 state legal build running EGR, stock mechanical fan and even the smog pump on emission legal headers.

So what makes this truck so special well these trucks stock made 230hp and 380lbs of torque and I had some customers dyno charts that backed those numbers up.  This truck pulled 352hp and 459lbs of torque at the REAR WHEELS and looks STOCK under the hood.  With 20% drivetrain loss which is a modest number for a TH400 trans and 14 bolt rearend that is 440hp and 575lbs of torque at that flywheel and it pulled that 440hp by 4800 rpms which should really appeal to the 1 ton truck and suburban owners that need that low end power and diesel like torque.

Here is the custom tuning form with the details on the build as well as the dyno graphs.

Since this project has been quite popular, I have recommended alterations to this setup for the 3/4 and 1 ton guys to build more torque while still making decent power numbers. Rather than spending over $2000 on heads, I have found that using a flat top piston 496ci stroker kit and fixing the pitiful 7.75:1 stock compression ratio to a more desirable 8.75-9.1 with stock iron TBI 454 heads and that same 211/219 duration camshaft or something similar will yield almost as much horsepower and more torque for less money.
